The inspiration to provide spa quality products developed in Rochester, NY in 2003, when three friends Ian Ganze, Cynthia Coolidge and David Christian Hamblin, sat at Hamblin’s farm table for a Sunday brunch, they brainstormed about David’s idea for a shampoo called FAG. Coolidge came up with the idea of turning into a social issue and changing the derogatory idea into a positive affirmation- defining the word FAG as fabulous and gay. Together with a group chemists, aromatherapists, herbalists, and investors they fulfilled their vision and founded a privately held corporation; Grayson Fairbanks, Inc.
In 2004 they launched F.A.G and www.fabulousandgay.com.
F.A.G products, based on natural essential oils, became a reality in August 2004 with three signature 8oz products and lip balm. Designer Kevin Michael Hamblin came on board as the chief graphic designer. In late 2004 Ganze stepped down from the corporation to pursue other interests.
In 2005 F.A.G was picked up by the folks at R Family Vacations to become the official product line for the summer cruise to Halifax and New England. 2500 people were gifted the F.A.G in the BAG travel kit upon entering their state rooms- and again on the 2006 Cruise to Alaska- F.A.G gifts were presented to passengers including the newly launched F.A.G PET Shampoo.
In the fall of 2005 F.A.G was the official product at numerous events including the Human Rights Campaign Dinner in San Francisco. From various silent auctions-including the NYC GLAAD Dinner to the second season premier party for Bravo’s Project Runway F.A.G was making appearances from coast to coast. In December of 2005 Instinct Magazine awarded the Best Men’s Grooming Award for F.A.G’s Shave Cream. About.com (NY TIMES Company) editor Ramon Johnson counted F.A.G among the top 10 holiday gifts to give in 2005.
In the spring of 2006 F.A.G was the official product giveaway for the Fat Girls movie premiere party at the Tribeca Film Festival in Manhattan. The party was hosted by Queer Eye for the Straight Guy’s Jai Rodriquez and the film’s executive producer Kim Fishman. F.A.G was a corporate sponsor of the Gay Life Enrichment Expo in Boston.
